WHAT
IS SHIATSU?
SHIATSU is a method of restoring and maintaining
health by adjusting and balancing the body's primary communication
network. This network, which is a system of energy, directs all
of our growth, functions, activity and awareness from the time
of conception and then throughout our lives.
In the oriental
tradition, all sickness, disease and symptoms are related to
an underlying imbalance in the person's energy system, This is
related to problems of the body and also to the emotions and
mind.
Shiatsu affects
the movement of energy known as "Ki" or "Chi",
which circulates through well-defined passageways or meridians.
A Shiatsu practitioner applies firm pressure along these meridians
and other specific areas of the body to balance the energy as
it flows to the organs, glands, muscles, nerves and blood. Shiatsu
affects the system in a way that triggers the body's regenerating,
relaxation responses. The practitioner may also use stretching
techniques, massage, and structural release to achieve harmony
within the energy system.
A supporting hand
in times of stress or injury will always assist recovery. Through
the medium of touch, the experienced Shiatsu practitioner is
able to activate innate self-healing mechanisms within the receiver,
producing a heightened sense of well-being in body, mind and
spirit.
