SHIATSU
Treatment
Shiatsu is a form
of body therapy which originated in Japan. It is based on the
same principles as acupuncture, but without the use of needles.
By gentle, firm pressure with fingers or thumb, the practitioner
uses heart centered touch to improve and balance the flow of
energy throughout the body and harmonize the body's energy system.
Treatment sessions
are usually 50-55 minutes and use a variety of massage techniques
including rocking, kneeding, joint rotations and stretching to
further relax and energize the recipient. Shiatsu is traditionally
given on a futon or body cushion, with the receiver fully clothed.
A practitioner may also use a professional table or massage chair.
Shiatsu reduces
the stress which causes hyper activity of the sympathetic nervous
system, and promotes the regenerating, relaxing responses of
the parasympathetic nervous system.

Stress, Illness
and Health
Stress, which is
connected to over-activity of the sympathetic nervous system
and its fight/flight mechanism, causes the body to unecessary
use energy. The build up of unresolved stress over time causes
the body to hold chronic tension and to experience physical and
mental fatigue. This can lead to the exacerbation of negative
emotional patterns which contributes to a loss of vitality and
enthusiasm. As it drains the body of its energy, stress contributes
to a wide spectrum of symptoms, conditions and syndromes. By
utilizing the body's response to touch, Shiatsu activates the
body's parasympathetic nervous system, allowing the reciepient
to relax deeply. This relaxation response helps relieve stress
and discomfort, allowing the receiver's natrual healing ability
to function efficently.with the following results:
- Reduction of the
sympathetic/stress response patterns.
- The functions
of regeneration and energy building are revitalized.
- Helps to transfer
negative emotions and thought patterns over to positive patterns.
- The major body
systems and functions are strengthened. This includes: digestion,
nutritional absorption, elimination, circulation, breathing and
immunity.
By activating the
parasympathetic responses and reducing the sympathetic stress
patterns, Shiatsu helps to eliminate the underlying cause of
many negative symptoms and conditions. Shiatsu treatments are
therefore effective in promoting greater physical, emotional
and mental well-being, along with increasing a person's enthusiasm
and participation in life. Symptoms such as stiffness, headaches
and backaches are alleviated. Recipients report feeling calmer,
lighter and more balanced. The whole body functions more smoothly,
and the reciever experiences a general sense of well-being.
SHIN
TAI - Life Force Recovery
Shin Tai treatments
are offered at the I.S.S. school facility. This is a form of
bodywork which integrates Shiatsu with contemporary western healing
techniques. Because of the results of this type of treatment,
it is also called Life Force Recovery.
Life Force Recovery
treatments seek to release energy, or life force, that has become
trapped in the soft tissue system of the clients'body. Since
it is trapped, the life force is unusable in the person's present
life activities.
The treatments
are based on the idea that the soft tissue of the body which
is called fascia holds life force in static forms which are detrimental
to the physical, emotional and psychological well-being.
Fascia has a
number of important functions:
A. Recent
studies have shown fascia to be the conductive medium used by
the Acupuncture meridians in order to travel throughout the body.
Other energies and vibrational sources, such as the chakras,
also use the fascia to interact with the physiological process.
B. Fascia reacts to physical, emotional and psychological stress.
It can become bound-up (as in the case of scar tissue), contracted,
overstretched and torsioned. Over time, this causes un-natural
and oppressive force vectors within the body which have the following
effects:
- Interference and
distortion of energy flows. This makes it more difficult to reestablish
proper energy balance. It therefore reduces results from other
forms of therapy.
- Constriction and
inhibition of organ function, nerve conduction, blood flow and
lymph passages.
- Pulls the posture
out of alignment with gravity. This means a person has to use
more energy to deal with gravity. Since the bones are now not
in a position to do their job, muscles begin to ossify (harden)
to compensate.
- Chi (energy +
information) is held in static forms or "limbo". This
causes the body/mind to fixate on past or projected future events.
A person has less energy to function in the present (reality).
They keep reliving (re-creating) past events/responses via the
activities of the present.
As more life force
becomes invested in stress memories (past/future fixation), a
person literally energetically becomes absent in their own life.
It is like accumulating negative compound interest in the bank.
"They are not all there" becomes an energetic reality.
It is analogous to a person who throws an elaborate party (their
life) but he or she doesn't show up.
A structural example
of this phenomenon may be as follows:
If one turns the body, all of the vertebrae must rotate to accommodate
this motion. If when we turn back to the neutral position, one
or two vertebrae stay rotated, they/we are stuck in that moment
when we turned. The body now has to use energy to maintain this
misalignment, or fixation, and also must continually use energy
to make and monitor compensatory structural positioning.
This example can
be extended to the function of the fascia. If fascia does not
resolve reactions caused by emotional/psychological stress, a
person stays locked into the moment or time period when the stress
or trauma occurred. In the case of fascia, all of the sensory/emotional
stimulation present at the time of the stress is registered and
internalized, and compressed in the unresolved tissue pattern.
Negative emotional
and psychological action must then take place to compensate for
that part of the person that is now tied-up in the stress memory
and unable to respond to present-time life.
- Two other factors
compound this problem:
The body has to continually use more energy to maintain the stress
system(s).
- The stress memory
continues to erroneously inform us that these past events are
somehow still going on in the present. Subliminally, we keep
basing our perceptions and reactions on the misinformation received
from the body/mind and weave it into our self-esteem, relationships
and activities.
Signs of unavailable
Life Force
- You are not enjoying
life.
- Symptoms and conditions
that just won't change: back pain, constipation, poor libido,
menstruation problems, fatigue, etc...
- Can't get projects
to more ahead.
- Feelings of being
ineffective.
- Relationships
seem unproductive.
- Job or career
feels stagnated.
- Lack of creativity
and enthusiasm.
- Feeling overwhelmed,
under pressure.
- You feel like
you are waiting for something which will then make everything
all right.
Signs that Life
Force is being recovered
- What we already
have becomes more useful.
- Projects (or things
we have to do) that have been stuck begin to move forward.
- Improved self-esteem,
self-worth.
- Greater physical
vitality.
- Many symptoms
begin to clear up, seemingly by themselves.
- Enthusiasm, motivation
& passion returns to the center of our activities.
- What is happening
in life seems much more interesting.

CENTER's ACTIVITIES for your
HEALTH
Tai
Chi
Tai Chi classes
are taught every Monday and Thursday night at the I.S.S. by Mr.
Rolley Brown.
Tuition: $ 13.- per class or $ 110.- for 10 consecutive classes.
No advanced registration
is needed. For your first class, try to arrive a few minutes
early in order to register. Wear loose comfortable clothing and
stocking or flat-soled non-street shoes (no bare feet). Please
call the school for more information, or Rolley himself at: 215-862-1924.
Each class will
include a group portion (including some of the theory and philosophy
behind this art, along with group practice) and individual instruction
for all students. Rolley teaches Master William C.C. Chen's 60
movements short form of Yang family Tai Chi Chuan (Long forms
usually have 108 or 128 movements). This style derives from Grandmaster
Chen Man-Ching, who was the last disciple of Yang Cheng-Fu, creator
of the consistently slow-motion style widely practiced throughout
the world today.
Yoga
The Yoga of energy
redeployment, presented at the I.S.S. by Michael Yoshpa, is a
synthesis of techniques and teachings from many traditional practical
systems of inner development including Hatha and Kundalini Yoga,
Taoism, Martial Arts, Native American practices, etc.... This
Yoga deals with the development of the awareness of the Energy
Body - the energetic counterpart to the physical body. Some of
the techniques that will be presented are innovative and were
designed to facilitate positive changes in habitual energy patterns
of fatigue, stress and stagnation.
This Yoga is helpful
for anyone who is interested in a creative approach to self-exploration.
It will allow you to discover new horizons in your practice of
Shiatsu or any other type of bodywork, yoga, martial arts, meditation
or whatever path of self-development you may be exploring at
the present time.
Hours: 8 Wedesday nights.
Tuitions: $ 120.-

Light
Body Yoga
Light Body Yoga
is the synthesis of yoga, Chi Kung and innovative energy awareness
practices. It is effective for all the commonly cited benefits
of yoga and very helpful for integrating the effects of consciousness
shifts due to the awakening process. Light Body Yoga can reduce
transformational side effects such as Kundalini problems and
material life apathy.
This course facilitates
the development of any healing practitioner in that it improves
their own condition and increases sensitivity to the body and
its energies. Participants learn exercises, visualizations and
creative movement in order to relax and energize their own bodies.
Hours: 36.
